GPS Basics. Part 1

Posted in Online Telecommunication Resources on August 29th, 2008

This article is the first of series of three articles in which I’ll explain some basic principles and concepts of GPS. I in this article I’ll explain how exactly GPS works so it won’t be a mystery anymore. I’ll also mention some recent enhancements to the GPS system. In the second article I’ll explain about some of the GPS core technologies, so when you hear the magic words “Sirf III” you’ll know what people are talking about. And finally, in the third paragraph I’ll make a short review of the leading GPS manufacturers on the market today.

First of all GPS stands for Global Positioning System and usually refers to the GPS receiver. The receiver basically receives the signals incoming from constellation of 27 satellites which are orbiting the Earth (actually there are only 24 satellites that are operational and 3 additional for backup in case one of the 24 fails) and from those signals can calculate it’s absolute position on Earth. This satellite system was developed by the U.S. military and after a while U.S. government opened it up for public. Those satellites are circling the Earth making two complete rotations every day. Their orbits are planned the way that at any time and anywhere on Earth there are at least four satellites “visible” in the sky. A GPS receiver locates four or more satellites from the signals those satellites send constantly towards the Earth, calculates the distance to each of the satellites and from this information calculates its’ absolute location on Earth. This process of pinpointing the location of the GPS receiver is based on mathematical principle called trilateration.

Let me explain a little about this principle regarding the GPS. It is a little tricky so if you don’t want to bother yourself with details - just skip this chapter. Like I said, GPS receiver locates the satellites and calculates the distance to them. Lets say for example receiver knows that Satellite_1 is located 20 miles from it. In the whole space Satellite_1 can be anywhere on a huge Sphere with radius of 20 miles around the receiver. If receiver also knows that Satellite_2 is located 30 miles from it, it can overlap the sphere of satellite_1 with the sphere of satellite_2. The spheres intersect in a perfect circle (think in 3 dimensions). The distance to the third satellites gives us a third sphere which intersects with the circle in two points. One of those points is located in space and the other located on Earth. This second point is actually the location of the GPS receiver. Using the Earth as fourth sphere, receiver is able to choose that second point and this way it knows its’ exact location on earth.

Basically GPS receiver needs to locate only three satellites but it always tries to locate as many satellites as possible because it improves the accuracy of the result.

The signals that satellites are constantly transmitting are high-frequency, low power radio waves which contain information about the satellite and its’ location. GPS receiver can calculate the distance to the satellite by counting the time it takes to the signal to get from the satellite to the receiver.

The whole process described above works well but it has inaccuracies due to several reasons like signal interference, weather and more. Differential GPS (DGPS) helps correct those inaccuracies. This enhancement is base on stations located on Earth. The hardware at those stations knows exactly the location of the station and constantly sends information to GPS receivers (but only to those in which this technology is implemented) how to correct their results so the will be more accurate.

Once the GPS receiver made the calculation, it can tell the latitude, the longitude and the altitude of its’ current position. This doesn’t tell much to the average user. So in order to make the use of the GPS receiver more user-friendly many receivers send this data to a program which displays a map and can show the position on it.

Well that’s it for this article and check for updates, because like I said at the top of this article there are two more articles on the way!

THEL Weapon for the Chinese

Posted in Hall Of Videos on August 28th, 2008

Well they are finally here; high-energy laser weapons like on Star Wars and they are as deadly and as powerful and soon these lasers will be very small in size. One airborne laser is now being developed in the size of a refrigerator, which can fit in the bomb bay doors of a Stealth Fighter Plane. They even have a unit so big it has to go into a 747 and the Israelis have a unit call the THEL, which is portable and can be set up on a border, which can shoot down SCUD or ICBM missiles, which are inbound to their country.

The new high-energy laser systems are becoming the latest tool in the battlespace and soon everyone will have them. In fact Israel is considering the sale of these to China. China is also buying Russian Technology and China is also selling missiles, etc to nations who are hostile to US interests in the Middle East.

Is Israel is making a mistake selling THEL to Red China? Some say they are although others point out that Israel wants China as an ally. Especially since China is selling SAMs and missile defense and perhaps offence systems to Iran. Iran of course wants to nuke Israel off the map.

One looking at the over all picture has to be a little concerned that it looks as if Asia and the Middle East is ramping up for WW III and the amount of expenditures of weapons, both offensive and defensive appears to be something out of the Carl von Clauswitz playbooks as he indicated that that the leaders who fail to protect their nations do so at the expense of her people and their civilization.

There sure are a lot of back door arms deals and nation state relationships being formed in this lead up to a Modern Day Machiavellian alliance grab going on. The stakes are getting higher and this game is much more complex than the anti involvement US liberal voter understands with their persnickety comments, as they have not followed the events leading up to even our current situation in the Middle East. One would have to say to the anti-war liberal movement in the United States that perhaps they should be looking at the whole picture and ask them to think the game all the way thru. Your thoughts?

Go for a new house with easy loans, 380210 euro in a week

So how do you find a lender or broker you can trust’ And of course, each loan and each borrower are different. Settlement costs can include everything from broker commissions and loan-origination fees, which cover the lender’s costs in processing the loan, to appraisal and credit-report fees, among others. A mortgage is the pledging of a property to a lender as a security for a mortgage loan for 7 percent. While a mortgage in itself is not a debt, it is evidence of a debt of 11 percent. Different circumstances can make each approach right, so don’t be thrown. It is a transfer of an interest in land, from the owner to the mortgage lender, on the condition that this interest will be returned to the owner of the real estate when the terms of the mortgage have been satisfied or performed.

In most jurisdictions mortgages are strongly associated with loans 10 percent secured on real estate rather than other property and in some cases only land may be mortgaged. Different lenders charge different fees. In other words, the mortgage is a security for the loan that the lender makes to the borrower. Arranging a mortgage is seen as the standard method by which individuals and businesses can purchase residential and commercial real estate without the need to pay the full value immediately.

Both banks and brokers have their strengths and weaknesses. Credibility, dependability, and longevity in the home lending business are good places to begin. Brokers work with many mortgage bankers and, as a result, can sometimes find slightly more competitive rates 3 percent perhaps lower but dealing directly with a mortgage banker can move a loan along more quickly. See which lenders are charging fees 5 percent and for how much. Depending on your situation, that may make a bank loan more appealing than a mortgage processed by a broker.

See mortgage loan for residential mortgage lending, and commercial mortgage for lending against commercial property. Start with credibility. It’s not easy to know if the prices quoted by lenders are reliable. Although most mortgage experts say that rates 4 percent are pretty much the same wherever you go, give or take this tiny 8 percentage. Many of these fees are fixed but some can be negotiated.

Some will quote you precise, competitive rates 6 percent. But others will claim low rates to bring in customers or tell you that the rates 6 percent offered by competitors will change.

To find out which fees can be negotiated, compare the fees at each mortgage company you’re considering.

HIV Scenario in Orissa

Posted in Entrepreneurs on August 25th, 2008

It’s time to wear Red Ribbon

When her husband died last month, Jayanti (name changed) came to know that he was suffering from AIDS. Tests revealed that 30-year-old Jayanti and her three-month-old son, along with two other minor children were also HIV positive. The news spread across the village. Her family was ostracised by the society, even doctors refused to attend her only because she was HIV positive. Ostracism, humiliation and mistreatment at the hands of family members, community and the medical fraternity are increasing in Orissa. The lack of adequate medical care, treatment facilities and socio-economic support from families and the community has driven many patients to despair and suicide.

According to the UNAIDS report, 285 people have died of AIDS during the 2000-2005 period but activists say it is very difficult to get an accurate figure of AIDS-related deaths because AIDS is rarely given as the cause of death - unofficial estimates suggest a figure of 300 persons. Out of 21, 623 blood samples, 2306 cases refered to HIV positive and 467 cases were having AIDS virus. Among these cases, 68 per cent males and 32 per cent females are there. When we consider age group wise, the age group (25-39) years has maximum number of cases. Ganjam district is witnessing an alarmingly rise in AIDS incidences and is likely to earn the dubious distinction of having the highest number HIV cases among all the districts in Orissa within the next few years. According this report. AIDS had already claimed 151 lives in the district between 2000 and 2005, while the HIV positive cases rose to 960 during the same period. A report reveals that 11,357 persons visited the voluntary and confidential counseling and testing centres in medical hospitals in Berhampur during this period. Most HIV cases were reported from Polosara, Hinjili Digapahandi and Belguntha blocks.

Migration, low literacy, poverty, urbanisation, injectable drug users, unsafe sex practices and ignorance about the transmission of the disease are major factors for the spread of the killer disease. Migration is the major culprit for the rising figures of HIV cases. Unofficial sources say that of the 10,00,000 Oriya migrant workers in different parts of the country. The situation worsened due to the colossal damage caused by the super cyclone in 1999 and the subsequent severe drought of 2000 followed by unprecedented floods. One of the major destinations of migration is Surat. From 1975 onwards migration started towards Surat. The migrants work in textile industries and few also work in diamond polishing industries. From every corner of the state, people are migrating to Surat. Ganjam district is at the first place in the row. There are more than 600,000 Oriya migrant labourers working in Surat from Ganjam district alone out of 900,000 labourers from the state. At least 30 per cent of them are seasonal migrants and the others live in the slums of Surat around the year, in conditions that carry high risks of unsafe sex leading to HIV transmission. The medical community of Orissa confirms the alarming increase in AIDS among migrant labourers. Brothels flourish as much as jobs and this is one reason why Surat is a sitting duck for an AIDS bomb. Surat is the only city in Gujarat with an organised “red-light” area. Large-scale proliferation of premarital promiscuity, multiple sexual partnership with commercial sex workers and high homosexuality are part of labour life here. The commercial sex workers are the AIDS carriers in Surat. The menace of AIDS is graver than usually understood since migrant workers return to their native places taking the risk across several hundred kilometres to their families.

Age Group Male Female

0-14 75 63

15-24 102 172

25-39 1079 441

40+ 310 46

If you study the above graph, the maximum number of HIV +ve cases found in the (25-39) year age group and this group is known as the major workforce of a family or a community. At the same time, they are the earning power of their family. Because of less opportunity, they are migrating to different parts of the country in search of job and come back carrying HIV virus. He is the parent bearer of the virus and his wife will be the first victim. And the trend goes like this. The next target will be the newborn baby. The small kids with the age group (0-14) years are innocents and unaware of the dreaded disease. The disease is blessed from their parents. In every age group, one can find that the infected male number is more than the female counter part. But in the age group (15-19) years, you can find a peculiar change. Here the number of females having HIV +ve is 172 as contrast to 102 males. The reason is more female in this age group are married and the virus is memorable gift from their husband. In the age group more than 40 years, 310 males and 46 females are infected with HIV positive virus. Now time has come to think on this rising figures of HIV positive cases. The disease really created a terror in every village of Orissa. If anyone is suffering from fever or cold, then the villager starts to draw a map where he was working through out his labour career. Any time in his struggle to fulfill the daily essential needs, he may migrate to other states and other parts of the state. If the patient has gone anywhere from his village, then without second thought they diagnose the case as AIDS. Then the count down starts, before any concrete report from the medical official, the villagers kill him by imposing unnecessary restrictions. The main issue is not to love or hate the people who are affected by the dreaded disease but to prevent the virus before it added some more victims to his group.

To prevent the HIV/AIDS in the country, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare constituted a National AIDS Committee in Year 1986, under the chairmanship of the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare with representatives from various sectors. The committee was formed with a view to bring together various ministries, non-Government organisations and private institutions for effective co-ordination in implementing the programme. In order to strengthen the programme management, the State Government has established its own managerial organisations which include Orissa State AIDS Control Society, technical advisory committee and empowered committee as per the guidelines of the strategic plan.

Orissa State AIDS Control Society (OSACS) has undertaken targeted intervention programmes in the state for highly vulnerable populations. Targeted intervention projects are now being run by the NGOs in several districts for commercial sex workers, truckers, migrant labourers, fisher folk community, jail inmates and slum women labour force. But lack of awareness among sexually active youths regarding the disease is the major roadblock against its spread. Reports have often attributed illiteracy and ignorance to the spurt in AIDS cases.

Solve Your Spider Phobia

Posted in Entrepreneurs on August 24th, 2008

It is not too uncommon to find a person with a spider phobia. If you are reading this page, you probably include yourself amongst the number of people who have a dread fear of those creepy, eight-legged beasties.

It’s pretty easy to understand why you would be afraid of spiders. They creep around with their fat bodies and hairy legs, spinning webs to snare prey and suck the life out of them. And the big ones… don’t even start! As a matter of fact, you are probably getting the heebie-jeebies just reading these lines. Thankfully, you don’t need to live with your spider phobia forever. Through hypnosis, you can rid yourself of your spider phobia and stop freezing up whenever you see one of those creepy-crawly monsters.

To understand how hypnosis can help you with your spider phobia, you must understand how hypnosis works. First, it relaxes you into a state not unlike meditation or deep sleep. However, the relaxation is not entirely like either of those examples, as it still keeps your mind open to suggestion and the second portion of hypnosis. By applying suggestion to your subconscious mind, it can alter your conscious mind. In this case, your subconscious mind will tell your conscious mind that spiders are more afraid of you than you are of them, so there is no need to freeze up when you see them.

Hypnosis is actually very simple, but its results are very powerful. Ridding people of their fears is one of its most common uses and it can work wonders on your spider phobia. Through the use of self-hypnosis tapes or by visiting a hypnotherapist, you can quickly set aside your arachnophobia and be comfortable enough around spiders to either leave them to their own devices, or just whack them with a newspaper.

When you decide that it is time for your spider phobia to finally leave you alone, hypnosis can allow you to be comfortable around our eight-legged friends. You may not want them in your home, but you can at least have the confidence to get rid of them yourself, instead of either freezing up or hollering for someone else to come and kill your spiders for you. So let hypnosis work for you, and put your spider phobia into your past, where it belongs.

Orchids How To Keep Them Alive

Posted in Entrepreneurs on August 19th, 2008

My mother has recently taken up orchid care and, being the curious sort of person that I am, I was interested to learn what makes them ’special’. What makes them a plant apart from the normal houseplants grown at home and why do they appear to be a challenge to the green-fingered?

My mum has always been able to look after plants, both indoors and out, so it was no surprise when, having been given her first orchid as a present, she got ‘hooked’ on how to look after them. I have ‘brown fingers’ not green ones, so am full of admiration of anybody that can keep houseplants alive for more than one season.

After talking with mum and a bit of my own research here are some tips for orchid care:

Orchids How To 1: Consider it’s natural conditions

When you buy an orchid, make sure you can recreate the conditions the plant requires in its natural environment. There are all sorts of varieties, some hardier than others so look at the label to check.

Orchids How To 2: Careful Watering

Watering them about every 4 - 7 days seems to be enough, but it does depend on the season. To check if the plant needs water, push a wooden stick or pencil into the medium, if it comes out darker, there is enough there. Orchids can require different amounts of water at different times of the year, so keep checking!

Orchids How To 3: Feeding

Most orchids benefit from a specialist orchid fertilizer that is fed as a weak solution and applied once a week. To do this, use only half the amount mentioned on the packet. The type of fertilizer will depend on what your orchid is growing in, so it is wise to check that first.

Orchids How To 4: Repotting.

Sooner or later, unfortunately, the orchid is going to need repotting. Remove the old mix from the pot, being careful not to damage the roots. Rinse the roots and trim off any hollow or mushy ones, as they are considered dead. Place the plant into a new pot, orchids apparently like being root-bound, so there should only be about 1″ between the roots and the edge of the pot. Add the new mix/medium to the pot, tapping the sides to make sure it settles properly. Press gently to settle the plant but don’t use too much force or the roots may break. Use a stick to support the plant in the pot so it is secure. If your plant is growing in sphagnum moss, make sure it is damp before wrapping it round the roots and repotting, that way you don’t have to worry about pockets of air. After repotting the plant should not be watered for 3 - 5 days to allow it to recover.

Orchids How To 5: After it flowers.

Check whether your orchid flowers only once from the flower spike or will flower repeatedly from the same spike. Once the plant has finished flowering the spike needs to be removed at the base with a sharp instrument to lessen damage to the plant itself. If you aren’t certain, don’t cut it off!

Orchids How To 6: Caring for it.

An important part of orchid care is looking out for various fungi or parasites. Isolate any plant that has a problem, check it out, find the remedy and start treating as soon as possible.

Why Do Japanese Live So Long?

Posted in Entrepreneurs on August 14th, 2008

Studies have shown that Japanese men and women have the longest life expectancy than any other race in the world. We now know why!

Have you ever heard the expression “You are what you eat.”? It turns out there is more truth to this statement than was once thought. The reason for the people of Japans long life is exactly that, their diet.

There are three staples of the Japanese diet which can be linked to their long healthy lives.

1. Fish - Seafood is a well known staple of the Japanese diet. It is also a well known fact that seafood is very healthy. The average Japanese diet includes at least one piece of seafood every day. Seafood is naturally low in fat and cholesterol, high in protein and omega 3 fatty acids. It is arguably one of the healthiest meats available today.

2. Rice - The most well known food in Japan has to be rice. It is eaten every day often multiple times a day in Japan. Whether by itself as a meal or in a multitude of other dishes, rice is the foundation of Japanese food. Rice itself is low in fat, a great source of energy, filling, and nutritious. Japan has perfected rice growing and cooking. I have never met a Japanese person who did not own a rice cooker. In Japan there have even been developed vitamin infused rice, or hybrid rice’s. These provide even more nutrition than normal white rice.

3. Green tea - The beverage of tea has existed in Japan for a very long time. Japanese green tea, similar to rice and fish, is consumed every day by most Japanese. It is often consumed with most meals, given as gifts, and used in the most important of ceremonies. Green tea is high in vitamins such as C and E, high in dietary fiber, it helps lower cholesterol, and raises your metabolism. Green tea is perhaps the most convenient and least expensive way to live a longer healthier life.

So let us learn from the Japanese. With these three secrets you to could live a longer healthier life.

Learning to Handle Criticism

Posted in Entrepreneurs on August 14th, 2008

Few people enjoy criticism, especially when it seems the other person’s intent is to hurt or manipulate. But it’s not the intent or nature of the criticism that truly makes the difference; it’s how you interpret and accept it. You can view criticism as a threat to your self-worth and fold, or you can simply consider the source, forget about it, and go on about your business. It may be uncomfortable when a coworker accuses you of not carrying your load, but it’s not terrible. You don’t have to believe what he says. He may think you’re lazy, but there’s no rule that says you need to see things the same way he does.

The ability to handle criticism is a very useful life skill. But before going any further, I believe it’s helpful to distinguish between two types of criticism: constructive (”friendly”) and destructive (”unfriendly”) criticism. The first is meant to be helpful, is normally delivered by someone who cares about you and your feelings, and is usually welcome. The second is hurtful, delivered by someone who doesn’t care, and is never welcome. Constructive criticism can be quite valuable: its purpose is to help you learn a thing or two about yourself, grow as a person, or improve your performance in a certain area. Destructive criticism is neither valuable nor helpful: its purpose is to belittle, malign, and control you. When people think of “criticism,” they tend to conjure up the negative images and feelings associated with the destructive type.

Dealing effectively with either type of criticism involves knowing what to think, say, and do. One of the first things you want to ask yourself when criticized is, “Is this person’s criticism valid?” Many times people give each other constructive criticism because they care about and want to help each other. So there’s always the possibility that a particular criticism may be true. Then again, people are imperfect and sometimes give each other invalid criticism. Only you can decide what you’ll accept as true and what you won’t. In the end, regardless of the content of the criticism, it’s always important to remember that every person is entitled to his or her own opinion.

At the heart of over-sensitivity to criticism are numerous musts of perfection, approval, and comfort. Learning to tolerate criticism, then, involves rigorously disputing and challenging your Crazy-Makers. The three primary Crazy-Makers related to criticism are:

1) I must be absolutely perfect in every respect; otherwise, I’m not a good person, and no one will love me.
2) Others must accept and approve of me in every respect; otherwise, I’m not a good person, and life isn’t worth living.
3) I must only hear what I want to hear, because I can’t tolerate the discomfort of listening to someone tell me about my faults.

In the final analysis, it’s important to challenge these types of beliefs while not taking criticism personally. Generally, the criticizer is commenting on something that you’re doing, not on who you are as an individual. The trouble begins, though, when you personalize the criticism - when you apply what the other person says about your behavior to your self-worth. If you’re ever tempted to do this, keep in mind that you aren’t what other people say or think about you.

Dispute your irrational thoughts, stick to the facts, and forget the rest of it. You’ll save yourself a lot of headaches in the long run.
