Poker Lingo For Amateurs

Posted in Lady Luck's Lair on October 31st, 2008

The World Series of Poker has sprouted many followers in the last couple of years. Amateur tables are popping up all over the world and friendly cash games are everywhere come Friday night. Whether it is for thrill or profit the so called sport of poker has the attention of many onlookers year round. While Amateurs know the basics of the game they usually get lost in all the poker lingo spoken at the casino poker tables. While some is lingo is made up by experienced players to throw off the amateurs, some are actually well known terms in the poker world that any amateur trying to make it big should know. Below is a guide to all the poker lingo you could ever want to impress your friends or intimidate an experienced opponent. Take a look.

Ante: The initial money thrown into the pot to induce betting. This is done before the flop.

All In: When a person decides to put all his chips in to bet on a certain hand. No Limit Hold’Em is the most popular game and All Ins are allowed as many times as a player wants. In Limit Hold’Em you cannot bet more then the pot itself.

Backdoor: Backdoor is a reference to when players are chasing a card that has not come up yet but has a good chance to. Having 4 cards of the same kind is a backdoor flush draw, having four cards in a row is a backdoor straight draw.

Bad Beat: A Bad Beat occurs when a player has a large advantage over the other and the last card beats the big hand by luck. Bad beat is usually used to imply that the player with the weak hand should not have been in the hand at all and it was by mere luck that he won his underdog hand.

Blind: In Texas Hold’Em, the game uses blinds instead of antes. The blinds are forced bets to induce some money in the pot by the two people sitting to the left of the dealer. The first person to the left of the dealer is the “small blind” and bets a smaller amount. The second person to the left of the dealer is the “big blind” and bets twice what the small blind has.

Bottom Pair: The lowest pair out of the cards out on the table.

Check: When a player decides to not bet he calls “Check”. This is the option of betting zero dollars.

Check Raise: When a player checks with a strong hand hoping another opponent will raise. The player then re-raises with his strong hand thus getting more money out of his opponent in the pot.

Drawing Dead: When a player is trying to make a hand that will still not win the pot.

Flop: The first three cards that are “flopped” onto the table. These are also called community cards.

Heads Up Play: When there are only two players playing a certain hand they are considered “heads up”.

Muck: A pile of unused cards usually in front of the dealer. These come from folded or burned cards. To “much your cards” is to fold them by throwing them into the muck pile.

The Nuts: Likely the favorite expression of any poker player. The Nuts indicates a hand that is mathematically unbeatable with the cards on the table.

Offsuit: When the two cards you are dealt are of different suits.

Pocket: The two cards dealt to you in Texas Hold’Em that only you can see.

Rake: The total amount of money that the casino’s dealer takes out of every pot.

The River: The last card to be flopped on the board. The 5th card to come out in a Texas Hold’Em game.

Short Stack: The short stack is referring to the player with the least amount of chips at the table.

Tell: A tell refers to a players action when he or she has a good or bad hand. Some players take off their sun glasses when they have a bad hand. Other players tend to itch their right hand when they have a good hand.

The Turn: The fourth card to be flopped onto the table in a Texas Hold’Em game.

These are the necessary terms in order to keep up with the pros. There are hundreds of other terms in the world of poker, yet they are much less needed or too experienced for the amateur. Learn this lingo and impress your friends or play at experienced tables and wow the crowd. Lastly, poker is a great game, but the greatest player in poker knows one this: When to know you’re beat. Everyone likes to hold’em, but sometimes you get that feeling and you just have to fold’em.

The Evolution Of Video Poker

Posted in Lady Luck's Lair on October 31st, 2008

Video poker has been around for over 30 years. It started out when casinos noticed that many people liked to play cards but were too scared to actually sit down at a poker table. Video poker allowed these players to play poker without having to look their opponents in the eye. With the explosion of online casinos Video Poker’s popularity grew exponentially. This growth in turn led to the development of new versions of video poker. Here we’ll take a look at some of the more important developments in the video poker world.

1. Multi Hand Video Poker

Multi Hand Video Poker is like “normal” video poker on steroids. As its name implies, you’re playing more then one hand at a time. Common variations include Jacks or Better (of course), 10’s Or Better, Deuces Wild and more. The Games come in 4, 10, 50, and even 100 hand versions. Multi hand video poker is an exciting twist on standard single hand video poker. Today, most online casinos have at least one multi-hand version.

2. Power Poker

Power Poker is Microgaming’s version of Multi-Hand Video Poker and is probably the most popular multi-hand version on the web. Currently there are 11 different Power Poker Games in 4, 10 and 50 hand versions. Playing Power Poker is like playing the single hand version of the game. You start with the same 5 cards in each hand. You then select the card(s) you wish to hold. The remaining cards are discarded and new cards replace the discarded ones. Winning hands are determined by a redefined payout schedule.

3. Progressive Video Poker

Progressive Video Poker is yet another exciting variation of good old video poker. Progressive Video poker follows the same rules as a non-progressive version of the same game. The difference is in the payout of the royal flush. Often times, progressive jackpots build through multiple casinos, so potentially the pot can be huge. When playing a Progressive machine, it’s crucial to play the max coins on every play, that’s the only way to win the jackpot.

4. Online Poker Rooms

Online Poker is not technically a video poker; however, since there are obvious similarities between the two, I felt a brief overview should be included here. In video poker you are playing against a machine, winning and losing hands are determined by a static payout schedule. However, when you’re playing online poker, you are playing against real people. There is no predetermined payout schedule, you can win as much as your opponents are willing to wager on each hand. Also, and more importantly, Online poker allows you to bluff, meaning in theory, if you’re a good enough bluffer, you can have the worst hand at the table but still win, if you’ve been able to convince your opponents to fold. This is the main reason for the huge popularity in online poker.

Lastly, as you can see, video poker continues to evolve. What started out as a game for would-be poker players who were too intimidated to sit down at a real table, has, with the advent of Online Poker, come full circle. Today a poker player can sit down at a virtual table with players from around the world. Amazing.

Prevent an Online gambling disaster

Posted in Lady Luck's Lair on October 30th, 2008

It’s a thin line between healthy and unhealthy gambling and disasters begin when we cross the limits and reach a stage of compulsive gambling, no matter if we lose or win. After the borderline casualty, no player normally enjoys the online games. As a matter of fact it becomes a compulsive obsession.
Online players still stick to online gambling and end up losing most of the money they have earned till date. Some even fail to keep touch with their family members and lead a lonely life. Medical attention is the immediate resort or else these players will escape into their world of online poker, bingo or roulette. Of course these are irresponsible gamblers who do not pick up the roots of good, fun and entertaining gambling methods when they learn it.
How can we help ourselves be good gamblers?

  • Before you step into the world of online gambling entertain yourself with the pros and cons of playing online
  • Once you read about issues like addictive gambling, you will be more prepared to face it or deal with it
  • Value the money you have earned at work. This will help you save and spend the money very carefully
  • Don’t put in more money than what you can afford
  • A game of poker or slots is fun. Don’t lose the fun with obsessive, immature gambling streaks
  • Try to make good friends online so that there will be enough people to help you out when in need or let you know that you need to slow down on your money spending spree
  • When you have an undying urge to play continuously for hours, beware and stop playing for a while.

It’s these compulsive gamblers who spoil the fun and passion behind online casino games. Today there are unlimited organizations which are open to help these unhealthy gamblers. As more cases are on the increase, online casinos are bringing in new suggestions or planning new ways to maintain the sanctity of online gambling.

Poker Table Position Strategy

Posted in Lady Luck's Lair on October 29th, 2008

When you refer to your position at the table, you should think about the place you have in the poker room relative to the player that is the dealer for that specific hand. If you are the dealer for this hand, you find yourself positioned last to bet, so your position is the best as you can see everyone’s reactions and bets before you make up your mind.

The player that has to bet the small blind is the player situated in the left of the dealer and after the pre-flop betting he or she will be the first to bet from now on.

The player that has to bet the big blind is the player situated in the right of the dealer and after the pre-flop betting he or she will have an early position. This position, as the small blind, is an obliged position, which means they cannot fold in the pre-flop

The player that has the position situated to the left go the big blind has the first action when cards are first dealt. Because the bets are placed in a clockwise motion, the ones that have to bet or decide later are the ones that are in late position and they are the one that have many advantages. They can think and see what everybody else is doing before acting and place bids accordingly. They can even gamble a little if the odds tell them too. They are most likely to lose less and they most certainly are the most confident players at the table.

The early positions presented above must select their hands carefully, if they have clearly a bad hand and they can fold they should do it. They have no privileges when it comes to decide the actions, so it’s better if they are more careful than the late positions. Let’s just say you are the first player to act, meaning the player situated to the left of the big blind. And you have these two cards: a ten and a Jack of different colors. The player right after you raises the bid, and all the other players in the games decide to give up and they fold. And now, you cannot change your bet, now you are being left alone with that player that stands a big chance of actually having a good hand and there is nothing you can do.

But, thinking from a different perspective, if you are the dealer you can clearly see how all they others are betting and also estimate the value of the pot and adjust it if necessary. If a dealer raises after a bet, all the others must act again, and is they betted once it is quite possible to do it again and maybe even again until the dealer is satisfied with the size of the pot.

Increase Gambling Affiliate Revenues Through Article Submissions

Posted in Lady Luck's Lair on October 28th, 2008

If you have a gambling-related website then you are certainly concerned with its rankings in search engines because you want to increase traffic to your website to increase affiliate revenues.

Fortunately, with article submission services and directory submission you can increase the visibility of your website as well as its ranking in the search engines because you will be gaining one way links and visibility. Consider the following benefits of article submission and directory submission so you, too, can enjoy a high ranking from the popular search engines.

Article Submission

The benefit from article submission is not as much from the information in the article, but from the links embedded in the article that increase your rankings with the search engine. Search engines work on a variety of levels, one of them including the amount of links on the Internet pointing back to your website. As a result, the more links you have the higher you are ranked.

So, part of your search engine optimization strategy should be to use article submission services. You simply write or buy an article and have links to your site and different pages in your site embedded in the article. Then, the article is submitted to various article directories and spread across the Internet as well. The more links you have the higher your search rankings and a great way to get a lot of links is to use article submission services.

Remember, once your article is submitted with the embedded links to your site it is more than likely to stay on the Internet forever and you will have one way permanent links to your site that are always helping you in the search engine rankings.

What makes this technique really beneficial to casino/poker/gambling affiliates is that they are able to not only create one-way backlinks, but also strengthen the theme relevance of their websites.

Example: A gambling-related article is submitted to an article submission service. The anchor text used in the article are gambling-related and point to gambling themed content on the target website. This type of link is very powerful. Together with the likelihood that the article will be hosted on a 3rd party site which is also gambling-related - the theming strength of the article, it’s position and backlinks makes for a very solid linking strategy.

Directory Submission

If you are interested in your website truly performing the best in search engine rankings then you will concern yourself with directory submission. There are thousands of different directories out there, some that apply to your website, and others that do not. By focusing on directory submission in the directories that are related to your site you will certainly increase your rankings. Of course, each directory has categories as well so it does take some research and effort to get your website submitted to all the directories in the right categories that really benefit your site. But, once you do you have a permanent listing of your website in the directory that will direct your target audience to your site day in and day out. Remember, however, that just any directory submission is not going to get you the traffic you want. You need to focus on submitting to directories that relate to your website in order to have your website directory submission in the location where your target audience is.

Theming is really about creating critical mass around your content, both on-page and off-page.

Article Submission = Permanent Links

When you rely solely on other websites to host your link in order for you to host their, you are risking that other webmasters simply chose to remove your link and with it your Search Engine rankings go down. However, when you use article submission and directory submission in order to build links to your site and make your website more visible to your target audience you are basically receiving permanent links and advertisement for your site. The benefit of this is that with a little effort you can get your articles submitted and your website listed with the directories and then just sit back and enjoy the permanent links and higher search engine rankings you receive.

Actually, they are a extremely trouble-free agency concentrated on offering informed instructions to any individual dedicated to let, sell etc. real property in most popular areas of the world. Real estate can easily be purchased in most parts of the world at the moment, one of the really elite areas being real estate available in Spain. It’s no effort to specify the tremendous estate available in Spain, the motivation for hunting for property here is a combination of the houses and apartments on the market and the chance of living amid this energetic populace. It is one of the most fashionable markets at the moment, and with the scenic splendor and agreeable weather surrounding you, who could be wrong? Real estate in Spain is very rich in history, culture and art, this region is and has always been home to lots of sophisticated cultures.

Find a great portfolio of Spanish properties here!

Some 25-30 years back you would find merely a trickle of UK citizens who are looking for estate in Spain. Just ask any individual who has chosen to move to Spain and they are certain to back it up. Lots of people would term it a short-lived craze and others term it a that’s nearly a fetish! Buyers who will actually move to this area will typically range from young urban professionals in search of an exciting new perspective to the elderly meaning to enjoy themselves and take it easy. Really it offers the whole kit and caboodle a patron may really wish for, and lots more.

8 Golden Rules for Betting on Horses

Posted in Lady Luck's Lair on October 25th, 2008

People assume that betting on horses is based on luck, and that the only method to win money while doing it is to get inside information. By inside information, people generally refer to match fixes or some other knowledge that one or more of the horses is sick. This might have been true once, but in todays modern world where the gambling is institutionalized and checked daily, this sort of thing rarely (if ever) occurs.

So What Then? Should you gamble according to unexplainable hunches and simply hope for the best?
There is a better option. Base your bets on information that you collect about the different horses and then make a calculated guess. I have listed here the 8 Golden Rules you should look out for when judging how good a particular horse will fair in the race you are going to bet on.

1. Check out the weather, and then check how the horses in the race fared accordingly. Certain horses have a tendency to outlast others in the rain, while others charge unstoppable to the finish line on cloudy days. Why? I don’t know, but what’s important is that its true, and it has worked for me.

2. Do not think that older horses run slower than three-year old ones as the season comes to a close. This is just not true. What you have to check is how many races each horse did run. Sometimes horses compete in too many races and this slows them down, but this has nothing to do with age.

3. Surprisingly, though you might think that there is a direct ratio between the weight of the jockey and how fast the horse can run, but this is not true. Since most of the jockeys weigh approximately the same, its actually the relatively heavier ones who manage to win.

4. Similarly, heavier horses can run faster than lighter ones, but only up to a point. A colt weighs about a hundred pounds more than fillies and thus they are more likely to win long distance races.

5. Just because a horse has new blinkers does not mean that the horse will run faster. I know this sounds crazy, but a friend I met at the horse-track offered me this piece of advice, and I had to refute it to spare the heartache from any who do fall for it.

6. Check the pedigree of the horses. Remember to keep whatever information you find. You can even buy one of the books on certain horses at your local bookstores. After you have gathered all the relevant information keep in mind that a colt doesn’t need as much of a pedigree as a filly to run very fast.

7. Don’t rely too much on pedigree at the lower class races. This is the place where those horses with a weak pedigree tend to shine.

8. Female jockies are starting to make a name for themselves, so don’t underestimate them when they race. Lately, they have been winning admirably.

Use the above 8 Golden Rules of Betting on Horses the next time you go to the track or enter an online sportsbook to place your bet so that your wager will have a better chance of winning.

Jack Reider is currently writing his PHD on the the reigns of Caesar and Augustus, but he also loves to frequent the race track and play poker. He created Gambling Portal.
