Poker Chips: Design And Tips

Posted in Lady Luck's Lair on December 31st, 2008

Poker chips, or poker tokens, are used to keep track during gambling and replace money during the game. Even though poker chips are called clay chips, poker chip sets are not entirely made of clay. Sometimes clay is used as filler, but it is always mixed with some synthetic material for durability. Clay composite chip sets were popular in the early 1800s and today are rarely used mainly because they are more expensive and tend to break easily.

Today the most popular poker chip sets are made of plastic, clay composite, and acrylic. Since 1930s poker chip sets were decorated with metal foil for extra durability and security. Ten years later, poker chip sets were printed in the center and along the edges.

Since 1950s most casinos introduced their own designs and logos imprinted on the poker chip sets, and these chips became collectable items. To add extra security and prevent counterfeiting, casinos started to use unique blends and materials in their poker chips. Most often, it’s a top-secret blend of synthetic polymer acrylic composite, sometimes with added clay or kaolin.

All casinos have their own unique colorful designs or at least a logo on their poker chip sets. These sets are produced only by a few specially appointed companies in the US, and the designs are protected by copyright.

For home gambling metal core poker or plastic chip sets are used. The metal core ones are heavier, can be customized in design and color scheme, which adds that special casino feel to them. Plastic poker chip sets are more lightweight and can be damaged more easily. On the other hand, they are less expensive and can be bought anywhere in any quantity. Plastic poker chip sets are the best choice for beginners in gambling, or for people who play occasionally. When people become serious about poker and start playing regularly, they prefer to invest in metal core poker chip sets or even in composite clay poker chip sets.

Poker chip sets are widely available on the Internet. Most companies when you place an order send a sample chip. You can also collect a nice poker chip set if you buy one-dollar chips from casinos - these would be of much better quality than any chips you could buy in stores, plus, they are a great conversational piece! And you can always trade them back for money in the casino or even play with them.

If you decide to keep your casino poker chip set, you need to provide them with a good “home”. To keep your poker chips safe you need a poker chip case with lock and key where you would store your set during a poker session. Most often, you will get a complementary poker chip case when you place an order for a poker chip set. If you buy one separately, look for a case made of metal or hard wood, with a reliable lock and soft interior lining to protect chips and cards. Plastic or vinyl cases are easily damaged and do not provide enough protection for heavier poker chip sets.

When you are ready to buy your poker chip set, make sure you go for the best quality you can afford and that you order enough chips to accommodate the number of players you usually have. As a rule, you cannot have too many chips, but if you order not enough of them, you can easily add more. Store them in a reliable poker chip case and enjoy the game!

Caribbean Poker Online: How To Play The Game

Posted in Lady Luck's Lair on December 30th, 2008

If you want to play online Caribbean poker but are not really sure what it is then you’ve come to the right spot. Online Caribbean Poker is a game played one on one with the dealer instead of with a table full of people. This not only makes the game go by fast but you do not have to wait on everyone else at the table to decide whether they want to bet on their hand or not.

Playing poker online is just as much fun as playing at the casino as long as you are winning. If your not, at least you do not have to walk away from the table in front of everyone. There are many online casinos that let you play for fun with no fee, if you are playing in a tournament there will, more than likely be fees to enter. Playing online is one way you can actually earn experience before your big game.

Playing online Caribbean poker is not that hard as long as you have patience. Not because the game is long, it is not, but because if you are losing you must get back in the game. Many online casinos allow you to download the software for free, making it possible for anyone with an internet connection to practice their skills. Remember the whole object of the game is to have a better hand than the dealer. The player must enter the betting amount, which is also known as the “Ante.” The dealer deals out the cards so that both the player and the dealer will have five cards, one of which will be placed face up.

The player is allowed to look at their own cards before placing a bet or folding. The dealer will then show you his cards. If the dealer’s hand shows an Ace or King, the dealer wins. A winning hand is known as a qualifying hand. If the dealer’s hand does not show these cards, the player wins back his wager, which is doubled. If the player still has a better hand than the dealers’ qualifying hand, the player will get double his wager. If you do not have an ace or a king, your best bet is to fold.

Do you think you have enough experience and are ready to play online Caribbean poker against others for money? If you are, you may want to try your hand at an online Caribbean poker tournament, these are actually done by satellite and the prices are big. Imagine playing poker and winning a $10,000 package, trips, cruises or even $1000 in cash.

Debt Consolidation Websites

Posted in Financing on December 30th, 2008

The New Year is nearly here and it got me thinking about the likely increase in numbers of regular folk needing help with personal finance issues and the inevitable deluge of ‘money saving’ tips and advice that’s likely to ensue.

I’m thinking debt consolidation services here in particular . . . I imagine that many consumers will have over spent in the Christmas period and that a few will wake up with a bit of a financial hangover. But I’m also wondering what affect the credit crunch will have had on the debt consolidation industry, specifically in relation to the recent demise of the secured loan market.

Anyhow, I put together a quick list of useful debt consolidation resources where you will be able to find lots of useful debt advice on personal debt and debt consolidation issues. Please note that I’m not endorsing any of these debt consolidation resources . . . they’re just a list of useful websites I found when researching debt consolidation myself.

The sites are a mix of commercial, not-for profit and informational resources offering a wide range of help and debt advice with debt consolidation, including debt consolidation loans and alternative debt solutions such as free debt management plans and general personal finance advice.

As ever, I’d suggest you use your own judgement when using this debt consolidation resource list:

PS: As far as I can tell the specifics of ‘debt consolidation’ are taking out one larger loan in order to repay all your existing debts and consolidate your repayment into the new (and presumably lower) monthly payment.

Oil Giant Faces Future

Posted in Entrepreneurs on December 30th, 2008

It’s time for the oil giant to wave goodbye to Peter Sutherland , its Irish chairman, but what is next for the CV of the man who’s already run the World Trade Organisation?

Peter Sutherland was in a grim mood on Monday morning: the day preceeding Ireland’s loss to Argentina in the Rugby World Cup, he could scarcely contain himself. He’d been at the game at Parc des Princes with his children and words such as “suicidal” and “bejesus” poured from his lips.

Yesterday, he was on the Eurostar, travelling back to Paris, for a meeting that was a mixture of both politics and business. Such are the opposing worlds of Sutherland: Dubliner, father of three, huge rugby enthusiast, chairman of BP, chairman of Goldman Sachs International, new chairman of the London School of Economics, diplomatic fixer and afterdinner speaker extraordinaire.

If we’re given a choice when we finally get to the Pearly Gates I’d wish to come back as a smart Irishman. In the past, I might deliberated over being an English aristocrat but it’s the Irish who are in charge now. They seem to be in charge of everything. The epitome of this is Sutherland, a key figure in two business powerhouses and a millionaire many times over, thanks to his partnership at Goldman. But he’s served 10 years at BP and has begun the search for someone to take the reins. Suddenly, the oil major has to confront life without him .

It’s very easy to establish through talking to anyone at BP, these past few years to realise what a force Peter Sutherland has been behind the scenes. While the company has had a variety of issues in America, they have been operational. On personnel matters, notably the attempt by Lord Browne and his friends to get the chief executive’s term extended, and then Browne’s departure following his lying under oath, Sutherland has played a pivotal role. His contribution in bringing BP forward is something which few can dispute.

Tips To Ponder Before Buying A Poker Table

Posted in Lady Luck's Lair on December 29th, 2008

Poker tables come in al shapes, sizes and prices.

Folding poker tables are reasonable priced and can easily be stored away or brought with you to the cottage or a friend’s house

Racetrack poker tables are probably the most popular tables on the market.
They are a great choice if you are buying a permanent piece of furniture for your gaming room, and the cloth/felt can easily be replaced .

Octagonal poker tables made out of oak or birch looks nice as a furniture and can also be used as a dining room table.
The draw back with the octagonal all wood tables is that they scratch easily and the cards are harder to pick up than on felt tables.

Standard all felt poker tables gives you more playing surface and are in most cases cheaper and more poker friendly than both the octagon and racetrack table.

The felt on your new poker table should be of sturdy quality.
There are several types of felt to choose from and the most expensive is speed felt.

Many poker table owners swear to velveteen and will never get anything else, but wool felt should also be taken in to consideration.

Moneyboxes are very practical and they have to be placed near the dealer slot.

A very important factor to consider when buying a poker table is to decide if you want cup holders or not.

Some feel that there will be more problems with players spilling drinks when they can place their drinks in cup holders on the table.

Many poker table owners use the three Cs rule during poker games.
Cash, chips and cards only. No food or drinks allowed on the table.

Others believe cup holders will reduce the number of spills on to the table, because if the player’s drinks are not in a cup holder, than they probably will be on the table felt.

If you decide to go with cup holders, than you should by a table with cup holders that are 2 3/4″ in diameter and 3″ deep.
These measurements are perfect for both beer bottles and cans. Any deeper and the players will have a hard time getting the cans out.(Especially after having consumed a few beers).

Getting a table with the cup holders underneath the table or in the armrest of the chairs is also an option.

Lotto System: Interview With The Creator Of Lotto System That ROCK The Market!!!

Posted in Lady Luck's Lair on December 29th, 2008

Lotto System: How you can win lotto easily and automatically

In this article, we will discuss on “A personal interview with the

Honest Lotto System’s creator, Ken Silver.”

Q: Hi Ken, thanks for joining us in this interview. Before we talk
about your lotto system, tell us a little about your background.

Ken: It really all started with the lotto system. I first developed
the Honest Lotto System in the early 90’s, and it sold really well
through direct mail. After a couple of year’s success with it I wrote
a “how-to” manual about my experience and how others could do
it–which also sold well. In fact you can still buy it today. Then I
went on to sell it over the internet in the mid-90’s and sales
increased massively. I wrote another, “eBook Secrets” about writing
How-To ebooks, and together my manuals have sold around 200,000 copies
from myself and other marketers who bought the limited number of
Rights like Ken Evoy (Make Your Site Sell) and Allan Says (The
Internet Warriors).

Q: Tell us how you developed your special lotto system.

Ken: Well, for several years in the early 90’s I had been looking for
ways to turn the lottery to my advantage, and I studied a lot of
material. It was an interesting period. You wouldn’t believe the
weird, off the wall theories out there. I even read one book that
claimed several thousand people could ‘will’ the numbers they wanted
through mass ESP (Extra Sensory Perception).

Q: Strange solutions indeed. How did you figure out your own system
then?

Ken: Through a lot of hard thought and lateral thinking. It helped
that my late father was a brilliant optical engineer, and some of his
analytical mathematical abilities might have rubbed off me! When I
found the “eureka” solution that seemed to work, I spent a further
couple of years researching and checking it. Although at that time I
had computers that might have sped the whole research process up, the
Honest Lotto System doesn’t actually work on patterned or computed
numbers. So it had to be done by hand. Took a while.

Q: Why is your so system different that you couldn’t use a computer?

Ken: I found that despite the blinding speed and computational
abilities of modern systems even back then, no-one had actually come
up with a way to predict a win from past draws. This was the
breakthrough for me. It simply told me this: That no-one can actually
predict winning numbers through analysing and extrapolating past
results. And when I realized this, it made my own system solution much
more valuable as a result. So, although it took a while to figure out,
suddenly I had found the ‘missing link’ to winning lotto.

Q: If you say that no-one can predict a win, how does your system work
then?

Ken: The system works mainly by eliminating the millions of number
combinations that won’t win. For example, you’ll never see 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 in a winning draw… that is pretty unlikely. And there are
countless other losing combinations too. My Honest Lotto System
identifies these bad boys, giving the winnable combinations
preference. Easy–once you know how!

Q. How is the Honest Lotto System different from other systems out
there, like Wheeling?

Ken: Wheeling just gives a variety of number combinations. It doesn’t
make any distinction between good and bad number combinations, so most
times you are wasting your money on the many poor number selections in
there. With the Honest Lotto System, EVERY line has the best number
combination you can find, which hugely increases the chances of
winning. That makes it different from almost every other system I’ve
studied. (And if you find a system that works like the Honest Lotto
System, you can bet your bottom dollar that is was adapted from mine!)

Q: OK, that sounds good. But has anyone won with your system?

Ken: Yes indeed. The most recent was an Australian couple who won over
AU$280,000.00 using it. Many people have covered their costs, and as
well won smaller amounts up to $50,000.00. One of the main advantages
with my system is that you can be winning moderate amounts WHILE you
are waiting for the Big Win to come along–as it eventually will.

Q: Is waiting part of your system? Why can’t we get the main prize
straight off?

Ken: What many folks don’t realize is that when a system like mine
can’t predict a winning game (and this is why I call it “Honest Lotto”
because to my knowledge I’m the only system that admits that fact),
the next best thing is to ‘wait in line’ for your winning turn. So
what you’re doing here is still winning while you’re waiting for the
big one. The Honest Lotto System puts you in the line, right up near
the top of the queue. When the right combination of winning figures
strikes - you will have the correct number combination to win it. The
best thing about my system is that you don’t have to wait several
thousand years - as one academic predicted for other systems. It could
be just a small number of games before the right combination is hit.

Q: So we might have to be patient? That’s hard to do!

Ken: Many people don’t have the patience to keep going, and going,
even when the draws go against them, but the real winners will
persist. There’s a story I read in a book about the first British
Camelot lottery. Two partners in a double glazing window business took
out over a thousand pounds a week (that’s about US$1400) to play the
game. They were almost broke at the 3 month mark, but - luckily for
them then - they won several million pounds! This is an extreme
example of how persistence pays off. Imagine how much quicker they
could have won using my Honest Lotto System!

Q: I was going to bring that up, Ken. Is there another way we can win
lotto quicker with your system?

Ken: Sure. Just increase the number of tickets you play. For example,
when I play in my country, I buy 120 lines. My chance of winning is
very much less - not very good at all in fact - if I were only able to
take out 2 lines a game.

Q: Are you saying you’ve got to spend a fortune each week then?

Ken: Definitely not. Every single line using the Honest Lotto System
gives you a better chance than any other system I know. But the more
lines you have in each game, the higher your chances become. So if you
can’t afford many lines each week, you should maybe wait a month and
play then what you were going to spend each week. But I emphasis to
everybody playing any lotto game at all–make sure it is money you can
afford to lose. Because it might take weeks before you make it back or
get a major win.

Q: What do you say to those people who think lotto is bad karma?

Ken: Haven’t heard the word karma for a while! Not many people
remember that over 50% of most State-run lotto game profits go back
into the community to help worthy causes. If you ever think you’re not
helping your fellow man, think again. The community benefits from your
contribution.

Q: From your website and what you’re saying here, you sure don’t sound
like someone trying to sell your system. You’ve covered the downside
of playing too.

Ken: I’m a highly ethical person - my wife’s a pastor, so she keeps me
in line too :-) So it’s really important to me that people get the
right balance of information to play right. That’s why I’ve named my
system as an ‘honest’ concept, exactly because I bring up all the
negatives as well.

Q: Is this why you use the term “honest” a lot in your website?

Ken: Sure. Most other systems out there are highly optimistic about
you winning, but they’re mainly based on guesswork and
wrongly-calculated maths. I believe mine is the first honest
representation of what you can and can’t do with a system.

Q: Thanks for your time here. Is there a last word you want to say?

Ken: Yes, I’d like to say to all future Honest Lotto System owners
this… take a good look at my system. Don’t spend your last cent on
playing. And above all, keep going - - even when your wins are small
or take a while to come through. You WILL eventually triumph!

Q: Thanks! Readers can see Ken’s Honest Lotto System website here:

That’s all.

Limit texas holdem poker - a brief introduction

Posted in Lady Luck's Lair on December 29th, 2008

If you want to start playing poker, you had better decide to play texas hold’em !.This game, though arguably not the best game of poker, has somehow superceded other forms of poker, particularly online.

Within texas holdem there are still decisions to be made.Do you want to play limit poker,no limit poker or poker tournaments?

This introduction only concerns LIMIT TEXAS HOLDEM.

Why ?.Well the tactics you use in no limit poker, and tournament poker will be completely different to those used in limit poker.
Also limit poker,i feel,is the best test for a poker player.

No limit poker can leave a player potless after hours of good play, just by going “all in” on what seems an unbeatable hand, only for a bad player,or loaded player who can go with you,to pull off a fluke. The player has done nothing wrong, they have to go with their hand, but, the bottom line is they are going home with nothing to show for all the good play that went before.

Tournament play is also largely down to luck(and patience). Also as with no limit poker, you can play great for hours only to lose out just before the share-out stage on one bad stroke of luck.Again the player does nothing wrong, but hours of play goes up in smoke with nothing to show for it.
Limit poker is the game - you can play for as long as you feel good, and you can manipulate the stake you want to play for each and every hand.

THE PROCEDURE.
Take your online seat.

Wait for large blind(2 players pay large and small blind every hand to start pot) - you will be prompted, just click to pay)

Two cards will be shown to you,and no one else.

A round of betting will now take place by other players round the table.
If there has not been a “raise”(increase in your large blind stake you have already paid) then just “check”(it costs you nothing and you get to see next card for free).

If there has been a “raise”you can either go with them(”call”)and increase your stake or cut your losses and “fold” - We will show wether you should stay in or fold hands later.

Next the “flop” occurs - this is when 3 cards are dealt onto table, which everyone can see.

There is now another round of betting, and apply same procedure as in first round of betting.

Every player will now see another card dealt - the “turn” card.

There is now another round of betting, and apply same procedure as in first round of betting.

Every player will now see another card - the 5th and final card - the “river” card.

There is now another round of betting, and apply same procedure as in first round of betting.

The game is now finished - the player with the best hand wins the pot - less the poker house cut,the “rake”

Another game now begins, this time you will be prompted to pay the “small blind”-click to pay. After this game you will get a respite from paying to play, and will only pay again(unless you have good hand that you do want to play) when big blind rotates the table.

THESE ARE THE BEST HANDS IN RANK ORDER
1. Royal Flush
This is the highest poker hand. It consists of ace, king, queen, jack, ten, all in the same suit. As all suits are equal, all royal flushes are equal.
2. Straight Flush
Five cards of the same suit in sequence - such asJ-10-9-8-7. Between two straight flushes, the one containing the higher top card is higher. An ace can be counted as low, so 5-4-3-2-A is a straight flush, but its top card is the five, not the ace, so it is the lowest type of straight flush.
3. Four of a kind
Four cards of the same rank - such as four queens. The fifth card can be anything. This combination is sometimes known as “quads”, and in some parts of Europe it is called a “poker”, though this term for it is unknown in English. Between two fours of a kind, the one with the higher set of four cards is higher - so 3-3-3-3-A is beaten by 4-4-4-4-2. It can’t happen in standard poker, but if in some other game you need to compare two fours of a kind where the sets of four cards are of the same rank, then the one with the higher fifth card is better.
4. Full House
This consists of three cards of one rank and two cards of another rank - for example three sevens and two tens (colloquially known as “sevens full” or more specifically “sevens on tens”). When comparing full houses, the rank of the three cards determines which is higher. For example 9-9-9-4-4 beats 8-8-8-A-A. If the threes of a kind were equal, the rank of the pairs would decide.
5. Flush
Five cards of the same suit. When comparing two flushes, the highest card determines which is higher. If the highest cards are equal then the second highest card is compared; if those are equal too, then the third highest card, and so on. For example K-J-9-3-2 beats K-J-7-6-5 because the nine beats the seven.
6. Straight
Five cards of mixed suits in sequence - for example Q-J-10-9-8. When comparing two sequences, the one with the higher ranking top card is better. Ace can count high or low in a straight, but not both at once, so A-K-Q-J-10 and 5-4-3-2-A are valid straights, but 2-A-K-Q-J is not. 5-4-3-2-A is the lowest kind of straight, the top card being the five.
7. Three of a Kind
When comparing two threes of a kind the hand in which the three equal cards are of higher rank is better. So for example 5-5-5-3-2 beats 4-4-4-K-Q. If you have to compare two threes of a kind where the sets of three are of equal rank, then the higher of the two remaining cards in each hand are compared, and if those are equal, the lower odd card is compared.
8. Two Pairs
A pair is two cards of equal rank. In a hand with two pairs, the two pairs are of different ranks (otherwise you would have four of a kind), and there is an odd card to make the hand up to five cards. When comparing hands with two pairs, the hand with the highest pair wins, irrespective of the rank of the other cards - so J-J-2-2-4 beats 10-10-9-9-8 because the jacks beat the tens. If the higher pairs are equal, the lower pairs are compared, so that for example 8-8-6-6-3 beats 8-8-5-5-K. Finally, if both pairs are the same, the odd cards are compared, so Q-Q-5-5-8 beats Q-Q-5-5-4.
9. Pair
A hand with two cards of equal rank and three other cards which do not match these or each other. When comparing two such hands, the hand with the higher pair is better - so for example 6-6-4-3-2 beats 5-5-A-K-Q. If the pairs are equal, compare the highest ranking odd cards from each hand; if these are equal compare the second highest odd card, and if these are equal too compare the lowest odd cards. So J-J-A-9-3 beats J-J-A-7-6 because the 9 beats the 7.
10. High Card
Five cards which do not form any of the combinations listed above. When comparing two such hands, the one with the better highest card wins. If the highest cards are equal the second cards are compared; if they are equal too the third cards are compared, and so on. So A-J-9-5-3 beats A-10-9-5-4 because the jack beats the ten.

HANDS TO PLAY.
To stress again this is an introduction to limit poker, after time you will not stick to any strict guidlines, you get a feel for the game, there might be an idiot playing who you want to get involved with,it is your lucky day,and also you do not want to become too predictable.

But for now some guidlines may be useful.

Position is often portrayed as very important - it may be in no limit, but in limit not so important,if a hand is worth playing there is no need to be put off by an increase in stakes. If it is not a great hand, and you are early player(in other words you may get raised by later player)then fold, whereas if you are late player(fewer players have opportunity to raise you)then you might run with it.

Also you should always defend your big blind stake to at least one raise. One of the biggest pots i have ever won at limit poker was a situation where i was dragged unwillingly into a raising game holding a 6 - 2 unsuited, and you can’t get much worse than that. The flop threw down 3 sixes !.
Let the small blind go unless you have at least a half decent hand.

These are hands you must play,or raise even if raised previousley.
AA, KK, QQ,
A K, AQ, AJ, KQ, KJ,
A - anything suited

Include these hands to check, and call if raised.
QJ, 10 - 10, J - J
4 - 5 suited, 5 - 6 suited, etc……through to………….10 - J suited.

Include these hands to play and check(discard or play, depending on your, and the games circumstances)
Any pair
4 - 5 unsuited etc……….through to ………………..10 - J.

THINGS TO BEAR IN MIND.

Players bluff a lot.

Players bluff much more than you would imagine - if you hold at least a pair from flop,it may pay to see it through to the end.Particularly if 2 suited cards,or a possible straight was flopped, and now their straight can’t be made, and their flush busted.

Have rough idea of odds involved.

You can exhaust yourself, and make poker pretty hard work if you take the maths to extreme lengths, but a rough idea of the odds to draw is a must.
Just have in front of you the odds involved to make your hand. For these examples the river(last card)is to come, and below are the approximate odds. If,say for example, you have a pair of 3’s and know you need another 3 to win the pot, there are only 2 cards in the pack that can win it for you.The odds are 22/1,if the pot, plus what will be played this round is only paying you 10/1 you have to fold,if the pot has potential for paying 30/1 you have to play.

Odds below are for river card - last card only to come.
It is roughly half the odds given below for turn plus river card - last 2 cards still to come
2 cards wanted is app 22/1
3………………………….14/1
4………………………….11/1
5………………………. … 8/1
6………………………….. 7/1
7………………………….11/2
8………………………….. 5/1
9……………………………4/1
10 cards wanted just play!

Most players are now too aggresive.

Almost everyone has read the poker instruction books, and the recurring theme within those books is be agressive.Don’t be intimidated, when someone raises and reraises,if you have the hand,go with them, let them up the ante, wait and hit them late, particularly if the raiser does it all the time - the table will go with this player, but maybe fold if you raise. This is the reverse of popular tactics, but i have tried both, and at least you have the option of bailing out if it goes wrong, most players having raised agressively early feel they have to stay with it whatever they end up with, and try to bluff their way out of trouble.

Play in the highest stakes table you dare play in.

Poker can be a drudge sometimes, particularly if you have a sequence of poor hands that you can’t play.Even if you do have hands to play, the norm is you will win the stake of the table each hour - $5/10 table will return about $10 - $15,for a GOOD player, not that much really. So what to do ? - play on a big stakes table, and win or lose play for a shorter time, enjoy the thrill, and if you do win,you will make a decent return.

Limit Poker Strategy

Posted in Lady Luck's Lair on December 26th, 2008

Most players think that they need pocket aces, pocket kings, pocket queens, and pocket jacks to make all their money in limit poker. When if fact the hands that I love and make the most money from are suited connectors like QJs or small pairs. Yes I know preflop these hands are dominated by the hands listed above. But, there are a few reasons why the suited connectors and small pairs are big money makers.

Suited connectors with big cards:

1. Its a hand with many possibilities. You have chances of a flush, straight, two pair, trips, top pair with a decent kicker with hands like QJs.

2. Plus its an hand to easily get away from with a flop of rags and no flush opportunities.

3. The premium hands are harder to get away from and well most of the time people play them too aggressive post flop when there is a good chance they are beat.

4. The suited connectors are great multi-way action hands where you EV increases with each play in the pot.

Small pairs:

1. Once again these hands are easy to get away from. Too many players overvalue small pairs but you shouldn’t as a Poker Noise member.

2. Look to hit your trips and be aggressive when you do hit your set.

3. If you miss the flop then its an easy fold.

4. The premium hands have really no room for improvement. Only two cards can improve them and give you a set. The difference is the small pairs you can fold much easier than pocket aces, etc. Aces you will go with to the river as you should but its hard to tell when you are beat.

So when you get mad that you aren’t picking up some premium hands then just remember that suited connectors and small pairs can turn into a profitable session.

100 Best Poker Freerolls and How to Make Money From Them - Part 1

Posted in Lady Luck's Lair on December 25th, 2008

Poker freerolls are what’s really hot right now in online poker with everyone wanting to get in on the act.

Just in case you’ve never played one, a freeroll is a poker tournament with free entry that pays out prizes in real cash to the winning players. They are not to be confused with “play money” tournaments that you can also play for free but do not pay out cash prizes.

Some poker freerolls have thousands of players in every tournament and are almost always full. It’s the idea of getting something for nothing that appeals to people and although the freerolls have relatively small prizes and although they require a lot of patience and skill to win, they remain the first port of call for many online poker players.

So how do you win at poker freerolls?

The most important strategy to adopt to have any chance of success is survival, you need to stay in the game no matter what. There are no second chances, when you lose all your chips you are out. You might have been sitting for four hours but if you get knocked out before you reach the money positions it will all have been for nothing.

Don’t be tempted into bluffing too much, you will almost always find someone who’s willing to call you - especially in the early stages of the tournament. Also use your all-in calls sparingly, only when you are absolutely sure you have the best hand and preferably when you have more chips than your opponent so that you don’t get knocked out even if you lose the hand.

On the other hand to win a Texas Holdem freeroll tournament you need to win chips, so when you get a good hand bet it aggressively and take out the “limpers”. Don’t let somebody call you with a 8 3 and flop 8 8 3!

This is a slog and you need to be prepared for the long haul. Four hours is a long time to play poker online and although there is normally a break every hour it is mentally very taxing keeping up a level of concentration for that length of time.

However if you do manage to stay focused on the game, you will be at a great advantage over most freeroll players. The psychology of poker freerolls means that most people don’t treat them with as much respect as they would a tournament that they had paid to enter.

Easy come easy go is often the motto.

So if you maintain full concentration throughout, adopt a strong survival-based strategy and play only good hands betting aggressively, you will do better than 90% of the entrants in a freeroll tournament.

Beating the other 10% is up to you!

Aaron Kanter Rides $55 WSOP Step Tournament on online poker room to $2 Million 4th Place finish in WSOP

The 27-year-old from Elk Grove, CA, known as “AK,” is a former bank loan officer who was playing in his very first WSOP. Kanter holds a bachelor’s degree in liberal studies from Chico State and was born in California’s central valley. He knocked out last year’s champion Greg Raymer during the tournament. Kanter, now a professional player, began playing poker in high school for dimes and quarters. He’s been playing regularly on PartyPoker.com for the past two years. Going into the final day, Kanter was the chip leader with $10,700,000 but was knocked out at 4:00 a.m. when his Ace-9-9, was topped by “Tex” Barch’s three jacks on the river.

Kanter, still overwhelmed by the experience, said: “It felt unreal walking into a room with 200 tables and thousands of players, then working my way down to 20, then 10, two and finally, the final table.” Kanter, who plans to use his prize money to secure his future with property and investments, will be one of the featured players joining the PartyPoker.com Million V in March 2006.
