Asia and Middle East as Potential Markets for Broadband

In the trend of increasing broadband subscription numbers all over the world, the major players are going to be developing countries and not the developed ones, which in fact are expected to lower the overall take up of fixed line connections in the near future.

According to estimates of research group Futuresource Consulting the take up of broadband will increase to reach the long-sought goal of 500 million. The development is expected to take place within a year from now.

The increasing reliance of the world on broadband is expected to see around 60% of connections making use of DSL technology while the majority of the remaining would rely on cable connections.

Patrik Pfandler, Senior Market Analyst commented on the market trend by saying that in the long term, India could be the most dynamic market, especially because it has very low penetration of fixed line internet at a little over two percent. The market has been predicted to witness a growth of around five times by 2012, by when the subscriber numbers would hit the 25 million mark.

The report also suggests that the internet users from Japan and Korea are getting the fastest broadband service in the world. On an average users in these countries get a speed of over 30Mb. The UK compares unfavourably with this number with the average speed here being around the 3Mb mark according to Ofcom.
