Wembley Stadium Accident Costs Employer More than £150,000

In light of the death of an employee at a construction worksite in 2004, Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has issued a strict warning to the employers in construction industry to ensure that health and safety measures are in place on their sites. In the mishap referenced, an employee of PC Harrington Contractors Ltd at the Old Bailey died while working at the Wembley Stadium superstructure and another was seriously injured.

Giles Meredith, HSE Inspector, while responding to the prosecution that followed the incidence, said that if safety measures are not well in place during lifting operations, the results could be grave, especially when many lifting operations were taking place simultaneously, at the stadium. He also extended his sympathies to the family of the deceased worker, who had to suffer because of the negligence of the employers. The incident happened in 2004, when due to dislodging of a platform during lifting, two workers were hit and one of them, Patrick O’ Sullivan died. The employer, PC Harrington Contractors Ltd based in Grays Inn Road, London, pleading guilt of violating Section 2 of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 accepted the levied fines to the tune of £150,000 and full costs of £25,203.
