European academic dress has huge effect on the traditional academic dresses of United States. In US the Govt. has a law or code to follow for the academic institutes of it’s to make their own type of academic dresses. Most of the institutes follow the code but some of them still ignore the code. They follow their own rules and regulations to prepare their academic dresses. The doctoral gowns, hoods, habits and caps are the most common parts of every type of academic dress of United States. There are some other important parts which also needed to fulfill the academic dress. The academic dress is hugely known as the academic regalia in this country.
The uses of academic regalia are mainly affected by the European styles and colors especially by the Britain. The Americans are once British and most of their culture comes from the British culture so their clothing. You can see that most of colleges have their own design and patterns for the habits and you have to wear that to be a student of the colleges. There are some institutes where you have to wear the doctoral gowns or these types of gowns to attend in the class but for most of the colleges and universities wearing gowns or any type of academic dresses is not permanent you have to wear them only for attending in special ceremonies like the graduation parties or doctorate meetings.
The tradition of wearing doctoral gowns has a long history. First a committee had formed in 1893 to make a standard for academic dresses. And since then there has a rule and the rule is always changing after a few years to make the academic dress more modern and effective. In 1932 and 1959 the rule hugely changed by the congress and the current rules is mostly depend on the rule of 1959 to make the standard for the academic dresses. The basic materials of the academic dresses were the gowns, habits and hoods. Using the honor cords in the cap is compulsory for all the graduates in the graduation ceremony.
Though the academic regalia is the compulsory part for every graduates and you will need it must in the graduation party students use to make their regalia according to their institutes requirements and the doctoral gowns are the most common parts which have to satisfy all the requirements of the institutes. People keep their academic regalia for many years to join the convocation of their institutes.
