K-nine over Aces

Posted in Fun Things, Gaming Hall, Lady Luck's Lair on December 17th, 2009

Last weekend I was playing in a multi-table online poker tournament, and I was happy to find myself starting out at a table of fairly inexperienced online poker players. My main poker competition was this guy who had been winning fairly often with mediocre hands. I figured that he must be one of the better players at the table, because his aggressive betting had led to a solid amount of chips. I made a few plays against him, winning a big pot on a nice bluff and taking a few hands at showdown. Still, he kept bleeding the rest of the players dry, so he had the chip lead after about an hour of play. He was getting pretty cocky, so I was happy to fleece him as soon as I’d gotten a good hand. Finally, I got my pocket aces, and I placed a bet for about a quarter of his stack. Everyone folded but my quarry, who called my bet. I figured that he was a good enough player to not commit without a high pocket pair, or at least a couple of face cards. When the flop came out 9-3-9, I figured that he had drawn dead, so I went all in. He called, and I turned over my Aces, only to see him turn over a K-9 offsuit. The lesson, don’t give your opponents too much credit. Some guys will play crap just because they don’t know any better, you’ll be left wondering where your chips went.

Late Stage Heads-Up Play

Posted in Fun Things, Gaming Hall, Lady Luck's Lair on September 9th, 2009

As Texas Hold ‘Em poker tournaments progress, the blinds go up and it takes a lot of chips to call. In the later stage of the poker online tournament, many rounds are apt to be “heads up” — a battle between just two players, often the big and small blind. This type of heads-up play requires a different approach than games where more players are in the action. In heads up play, aggression is critical to winning the hand. And because there are only two of you, any two live cards in your hand have far more value than when up against several opponents. In heads up poker online play, any pair is most likely a winner, especially pocket pairs, so bet out big with them. Even a solitary Ace or other face is a powerful card in heads-up matches. The all-in shove is most commonly used in heads-up battles. The game is definitely a coin-flip at this stage since any two cards really can win. Be prepared for psychological warfare at this point. It is impossible to put your heads-up opponent on a hand when you are the small blind. Don’t play raggy low ranked cards from the small blind. It’s better to concede your small blind and move onto the next hand, where you will be the big blind. Small blind calling with small cards will cripple your chip stack. You are giving your opponent the opportunity to raise when you have no clue as to what your opponent is holding. If you do have a pair or high ranking cards in the small blind heads-up, then raise or go all in.

Wives, Mothers… Poker Players?

Posted in Fun Things, Gaming Hall, Lady Luck's Lair on July 29th, 2009

If you spend any amount of time at a poker casino you will notice that the large majority of poker en ligne players are male. This has been a long accepted stereotype that started when women were considered too delicate to enter the rough and tumble locations where illegal gambling took place. It was further cemented by traditional marriage roles that limited the amount of personal control a woman had over her finances. Women were meant to tend house in the past, not beat their husbands at poker.

The stereotype of an all male playing body has been challenged recently by female online poker superstars that have proven their mettle at the table. Stars like Annie Duke show that women should not be immediately discounted as serious competitors just because of their gender. While this goes a long way towards gender equality at the card table, it is only so much help to the average woman. Studies show that woman often spend less time at the casino when they do gamble, wager less, and play far more conservatively than their male counterparts. Even when they have a successful run, many women worry that the time that they spent at the casino could have been spent more productively doing something else.

It is not easy for married women and mother to join the poker world. There are a lot of mental and societal roadblocks in place that keep them from embracing the idea that they should have the same enjoyment at the table as everyone else. Do your part if you see a woman at the table and make her feel welcome. Every game can always use some fresh blood.

Blur Praise Chinese Lanterns

Posted in Entertainment Events, Fun Things on July 18th, 2009

Chinese Lanterns have step by step but certainly become an intrinsical part of the festival feeling and Glastonbury is surely the ultimate - the big daddy- of all festivals. This year, these magical lanterns made an even more important visual aspect in the Somerset farm, as they featured as part of Blur’s emotional set which finished off the festival on Sunday night. This was the first time that Blur has taken to Glastonbury’s stage since 1998 and it was a euphoric and hitting performance- not least because the sight of sky lanterns floating towards the moody skies created such a breath taking sightThey even inspired one Glasto-poet to write a stanza in respect of them in his verse form For Tomorrow:10 unsteady Chinese lanterns sailedacross the sky like lovers, lovers who had wounded uswhom we had not seen for years.Neither did they escape the attention of the headline act. Damon Albarn from Blur commented that “they are beautiful” adding “It seems like there’s been a really, really positive atmosphere here”, no doubt helped along by the calming, hypnotic Chinese lanterns being launched. So there you have it- Chinese lanterns, wish lanterns, whatever you desire to call them- never fail to motivate, even at Glastonbury.

Low Suited Connectors

Posted in Fun Things, Gaming Hall, Lady Luck's Lair on May 5th, 2009

A lot of online poker players will fall into the trap of playing hands at the casino that are unplayable-leave it to boredom or desperation, but it’s a bad habit of poker players to talk themselves into hands that no one should play.

Low suited connectors are a typically terrible hand that starts to look attractive. 5-4 of clubs looks enticing because you start with straight and flush potential in addition to the possibility of pairing up. Sounds pretty good, eh? Change those cards to 5-4 unsuited. Not so pretty now, eh? The odds of you flopping your flush are pretty slim, and with 5-4, you still have to consider the chance that someone else has a higher flush.

If you’ve got something like Jack-10 suited, or even 10-9 suited, you’ve at least got some higher cards to pair up with. Otherwise, save your blind for a better set of cards. After a dry run of cards, it can be easy to lower your standards. Once you lower your standards, you game goes out the window and takes your chips with it. No matter how bad things look, keep playing your game and wait for the cards to turn your way.

Youth Killed Eight Belles

Posted in Equines, Fun Things, Lady Luck's Lair on February 5th, 2009

The untimely demise of the now famous filly Eight Belles has plunged thoroughbred racing into a crisis. Accusations have been flying to and fro, but no definite incriminating aspects have been uncovered. The question “What really killed Eight Belles?” still remains unanswered.

Theories have surfaced, answers have been offered. All of them are plausible. All of them are tangible. From the genetic flaws that deliberately produce faster but non-durable thoroughbreds to overzealous jockeys who whip like maniacs, theories to what caused the filly’s death are numerous. But has anyone looked over the fact that she — or any other thoroughbred for that matter — was too young to race?

Eight Belles was three years old when she fractured her front ankles which ultimately led to her death. She was indeed, too young. Her body was not mature enough to take such punishment. The race may have lasted only for a moment, but the incessant trainings sapped the energy and the durability of the young filly, rendering her vulnerable.

It was her youth that killed Eight Belles. Her bones and joints have not reached their physical maturity to withstand the pressure that horse races bring. She raced young and sadly, died too soon.

The Rollercoaster Life of Casinos

Posted in Fun Things, Gaming Hall, Lady Luck's Lair on September 25th, 2008

Casinos have changed in the past few years. Glamorized by movies and books, even online casino have been thought to be the best place in the world to be. The hotels attached to them have been known to attract celebrities, movies, books and so much more.

Casinos have changed in a number of ways since some of those movies came out in the 60’s. One of the things that have changed is security. Security in casinos are much tougher than they use to be. It is not as easy as some of the movies have portrayed to break into a casino.

At one time, the casinos tried to make the area more family friendly. However, as most found out, some children were not allowed to enter into casinos. Hence, that idea has been dwindling quite a bit throughout the years, even as games like online poker have risen.

Hotels have acquired more and more casinos. In doing this, casinos just by themselves are not present at much anymore, if at all. Limits on how much are entered into a machine such as slots, or into a card game has changed a lot, mostly a higher amount is now requested.

Casinos may have changed a bit since those movies have come about. It has not hindered people wanting to go night after night to a casino.
